2013 - Slowing Down

There were less opportunities to see Barry in 2013. In fact, it's fair to say I only saw Barry 3 times in 2013 (not counting Manilow on Broadway). Yes, there were more than 3 shows, but that's because Barry did multiple shows in a single location - or, fairly close to each other, anyway. I love it when he does that, though. I got spoiled to being able to see Barry several nights in a row while he was doing his Vegas residencies - and I don't want to give it up!

It goes without saying that I loved the Manilow on Broadway run at the St James in New York City. I didn't think I would - I've had many bad experiences in NYC, and it's SO expensive - but I loved those shows so much. Comments on the St James shows can be found on the Manilow on Broadway section of this web site. By the way, hated the weather on this trip, too!

There were a couple of very disappointing cancellations in 2013. Still, I guess those could be counted as adventures, even if I didn't get to see Barry.

The Red Rocks show (outside of Denver) was rained out. That's an understatement! It was STORMED out. In some respects, it was worse than the PNC flood. At least at the PNC, I wasn't standing out in the open where lightning had a clear shot at me! (Although I was standing knee deep in water that was running down into all the electrical equipment... Yeah, I think it's a tie!) Anyway, that's why I say I "almost" made it from Boston to Denver! I guess I did "make it" to Denver - the show just didn't happen.

The next night, the Salt Lake City show was also canceled/postponed at the last minute. We found out as we were trying to pull into the parking lot. So that entire trip was a "concert fail".

Still, both parts of the trip were adventures... The Red Rocks venue was beautiful. I experienced a portion of Salt Lake City that I had never been to before. Rode the light rail, and honestly, was a little frightened during a portion of it. But I also encountered some very nice people.

Besides Barry's cancellations, I had some of my own, as well. I had tickets to Pittsburgh, Richmond, Baltimore, Raleigh, Atlanta, and Manchester, but just couldn't swing the cost of traveling to those shows. Couldn't sell the tickets, either. For some reason it's not easy to travel between cities in the South. And Pittsburgh is never easy.

But the shows at the Greek Theatre were fantastic! It's a beautiful venue. The shows were just prior to Barry's 70th birthday. That made them extra special for the fans. The Greek shows generated more than a few emotional moments. Part of that was because there were so few shows on the horizon; we had no idea if anything was coming next. I think another part of it is that many of the fans are beginning to realize that time is slipping away from all of us. It may have been Barry's birthday; but, the fans are getting older, too. Life situations change for all of us.

2013 was also the year that Barry came back to Texas! His first attempt was postponed by illness. The weather was scary, too. I was in my hotel room getting ready for my platinum (yes, I was doing another platinum!) when I got the text stating that the shows were postponed. But Barry made it to Texas on his second attempt a few weeks later.

The concert year closed out with the shows at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. That's another beautiful venue. The shows were fantastic. I believe that the lighting at the NJPAC was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The colors were so vibrant - absolutely captivating.

The last two shows of the year were very emotional, as well. This time we REALLY had no idea when Barry would perform again - no fan rumors circulating at all. The organization didn't make us wait long, though; it was only a few days before shows in 2014 were announced.

In September, I made the trip to Atlanta to see Barry's new production of Harmony. That doesn't count as a concert, but I did have a unique and magical encounter with Barry while I was there. A link to that story is on "The Projects" portion of the web site.
